After ski bumming the Canadian Rockies and a bit of BC for 2 weeks, it was time for me to sell the motorhome. I’d gotten a job teaching English in China starting in July, sent in my resignation for my current job a couple of weeks prior to this (yes I do work!), and had plans to travel a bit before the job in China started. My current job allows me to work remotely from anywhere in Canada, and since I had a few weeks left in this job, I really wanted to visit Newfoundland just to have finally have visited all the provinces in Canada. This all sounded like a great plan, but the first step in doing so was to sell my motorhome, because as long as I had it, I wouldn’t be able to leave.
I had gotten an Airbnb in Calgary for a week with the purpose of selling my motorhome. I spent the whole week doing viewings with no luck, but finally, I got a serious buyer on the last day of my booking who came and picked it up. She lived in Wainwright (a 4 hour drive away) and was only able to come at 10pm to pick it up. I didn’t want to book anything until she gave me the cash and dealt with the paperwork, and right after she did, I booked a one way ticket to St. John’s that would be leaving Calgary just after midnight.
Now it was time for me to figure out how to get there. My plan was to catch an Uber, but figured there was no harm in asking them if they could give me a ride, and they agreed! It was around 10:30 at this point and knew we had to high tail it over there. The airport was 20 mins away.
On the car ride there, I got a chance to talk to the buyer, Sara. She was born and raised in Wainwright and was a fairly strong and independent woman (which I admired) due to some things that happened in her past. She was also pretty adventurous, and we had great conversation in the car on life values, political events, and our lives in general. We got to the airport just after 11pm, and I quickly got out so she could get back to Wainwright not too late.

I quickly went to check in at the counter since I didn’t have much time to spare. Everything was going very smoothly until they had to weigh my luggage. It came back as 34kg (the standard maximum weight was 23kg and the maximum oversize baggage weight was 32kg) and the guy at the counter straight up refused the baggage. This led to me having to make a split second decision called “I left half my clothes at the Calgary International Airport”, and when it got down to 25kg, the guy just took the luggage without making me pay overweight fees (thank god!) and that was that.

Since it was a late-night flight, there weren’t many people going through security, and I was able to make it to the gate at 11:45pm for my 12:15am flight. I had never done anything this rushed up until now, and I couldn’t believe that I was about to get on a flight to Newfoundland in such a short amount of time. Surprisingly, I also wasn’t the last one to arrive at the gate.
