What are the most important travel tips for beginners?
Start somewhere easy, book your first night, buy insurance, share your plans and trust your gut. The rest you can figure out on the road. Here’s the short list, with the full guide for each one.
- Start with an easy destination. Somewhere with simple transport and a welcoming reputation makes a great first trip. How to plan your first solo trip.
- Book your first night and your arrival ride. Everything else can stay flexible.
- Buy travel insurance. Check it covers medical care, evacuation and any adventure activities. The pre-trip checklist.
- Share your plans. Send your itinerary to someone you trust and agree when you’ll check in.
- Use ride-hailing apps over street taxis. You see the price upfront and can check the car. Getting around safely.
- Don’t keep everything in one place. Split cash, cards and document copies. Money and documents.
- Pack light. You’ll carry it all yourself.
- Trust your gut. You never need a reason or an apology to walk away. Meeting people and trusting your instincts.
- Say yes to hospitality, with good judgement. Invitations are often the best part of a trip.
